EPAT (Shockwave Therapy)

EPAT, or extracorporeal pulse activation technology, is an advanced and effective treatment method approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This medical instrument deliver pressure waves into a target area of the body. This stimulates metabolism, enhances blood circulation, and accelerates the healing process. As a result of the shockwave therapy, tissue regeneration is stimulated at a cellular level, with healthy new tissue ultimately replacing the damaged tissue.

Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis

This noninvasive in-office procedure represents a breakthrough treatment option for many conditions, including those affecting the feet, such as plantar fasciitis.

FAQs About Shockwave Therapy

What disorders can be treated with shockwave therapy?

EPAT is able to treat many different foot and ankle problems which affect your stability and mobility, such as:

  • Achilles tendon pain at the back of the ankle
  • Feet and heel pain
  • Neuromas
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendon injuries
  • Trigger points
What are the benefits of this type of treatment?

This is a noninvasive, nonsurgical option that many prefer over surgery. There is no pain, no scarring, and no risk of infection associated with shockwave therapy. It is a quick procedure that is conveniently performed in your doctor’s office, and requires no downtime afterward, so you are free to immediately go about your day without restriction.

Are there side effects?

EPAT treatment has virtually no risks or side effects. The only symptom you might experience is some slight discomfort in the treated area for a few days after treatment. If you feel any persistent symptoms, please inform your provider for better guidance.

How long does a session last?

A treatment session takes just 5-10 minutes to perform.

How many shockwave treatments will I need?

Typically, one session a week for three weeks delivers the long-lasting results a patient seeks. Most patients express significant pain relief approximately four weeks of their first session.

What can I expect during shockwave therapy?

Gel is applied to your foot, and a specially designed hand-held device is gently glided over the surface of your skin in the area being treated. This sends high-energy acoustic waves to damaged tissue under the skin to trigger the body’s natural healing response.

What about after the procedure?

Post-treatment care information will be provided by the doctor. It is essential that you follow your doctor’s recommendations to experience the maximum pain relief after shockwave therapy for your foot or ankle problem.
