What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of foot & ankle disorders. A podiatrist, also known as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), receives a degree from one of nine accredited 4-year Podiatric medical schools in the United States. In addition to 4 years of education, they also undergo an extensive 3-year residency program specializing in the treatment and management of the lower leg, ankle, and foot.

Podiatrists typically work with patients who have conditions ranging from ingrown toenails and blisters to bunions, heel spurs, and plantar fasciitis. Podiatrists also provide specific foot care for patients with diabetes. Diabetics are especially prone to foot problems and require management and monitoring and specialized care when problems arise.  Podiatrists can prescribe medications and physical therapy, suggest orthotics, or foot surgery, and provide other treatments depending on the patient's condition.
